Indiana, il!
It turns out I’m more of a place writer than a day writer. Sometimes tour grinds to a halt, parking its busses and letting its passengers grow happy and complacent in hotel rooms. And it doesn’t feel right to write about tour from the vantage of all those pillows. Don’t get me wrong, hotel beds definitely win out over bus coffins. But I start losing touch with the rhythm and purpose of things. So I’m providing myself the limitation of doing place by place commentary.
Tonight was our first ever show in Indianapolis, and that’s kind of a rare thing these days. I don’t know if it was just “first timer” energy in the room or if Indianapolites are generally really pumped and lovely. Regardless, it was one of those brilliant nights of good crowd, well played show, well felt show. A good show usually starts with an expressive audience, waaaay easier to bounce off of.
Here’s where I seamlessly weave in some yoga talk. After 3 chicago shows, too much wine and loud talking, my voice was an octave lower and full of gravel. This usually means singing gets really hard and pretty half assed for a while. This morning I spent an hour with a dvd, unusual for me but coming highly recommended from a good source. Abdominal strengthening kriyas with Kia Miller. In simple terms, breath of fire in various long held positions. In Miller’s terms, lifting energy up from the navel to the heart. Picture lots and lots of repetition and for me today, some swearing. This stuff is super strengthening and crazy intense. The moments of letting go between cycles were total yoga drugs euphoria….man.
After all this I felt pretty strange. Which seemed normal. I moved on to other travel-day activities like the internet and napping. So later during the show, when my voice busted out of me like a prize race horse I was shocked, pleased, and a little yoga-smug. Hello power center of my diaphragm. Ok, what kind of hippy-mom phrase was that?!
Needless to say, I plan on delving deeper into the extreme sport of abdominal strengthening kriyas. Perhaps less swearing over time…
Before my memory fades I must give a shout out to things that were extra awesome in Chicago. Yogaview, you gave me the best class of the tour so far. XOCO’s roasted mushroom sandwich is a genius. Intelligentsia coffee, you allowed me to discover the true wonder of double fisting a cappuccino and a V60 pour-over (extra nerdy drip coffee) HAH! Amazing-ness.
G’night,
Sarah.
