Belfort Les Eurockeenes Festival
This was one of those wake up and you’re in it days. Thankfully Les Eurockeenes is pretty relaxed- not a seething mud pit of barfing festie faces. Well, not from where we stood anyhow. A long day of existing in tents and trailers backstage, from morning til….morning really. They made it cozy at least, airstream trailers and shady tables, grassy picnic zones. Except for the intermittent main-stage soundcheck 10 feet away from our bubble that rattled the ear drums. In the moment where front of house is using the audio from last nights “no cars go” to test the system and the dressing room is shaking from the subs and you haven’t had breakfast yet, you’re wishing you were one of the more nocturnal ones. Being early on in the day, I had an entire airstream trailer to myself for yoga-ing. Level and just big enough (fingertips grazing the rounded ceiling, and I’m little…) I cued up some softness from the itunes, Beach House then Bon Iver, and gave myself some thorough Ujjayi Vinyasa time. Mid-way through this peaceful time came the blast of the subs, audio bombs battling Justin Vernon’s heartbreak ballads. The bolts holding my yoga studio together threatening to jump ship.
And that was about the biggest event in my day until showtime. We were a quiet posse, a bored posse perhaps. And a little tour tired for sure. Lots of noses in books. The show was good here though. We’ve played this festival before and I remember it fondly. It’s in a really pretty setting, all wooded with little lake beaches and a chilled out country vibe. The crowd was really lovely. Not super crazy and yelly, but really present and gave big enough love. I think we played really well too. It’s funny, when you’re kind of under the weather and have lower expectations of your own performance energy wise, sometimes those shows end up being surprisingly good. Like any forcing is taken out, slightly less intense delivery but the dynamic just unfolding naturally. Or something.
And that is all there was. Belfort, I didn’t even look on a map to see where exactly this day took place. The muddled middle of tour is bumping along and I’m saving my breath for those hyper social rock band moments that do happen…sometimes.
